CH3COOH is ethanoic acid. -COOH is the formula of the functional group present in ethanoic acid.

Its 5 to 8% solution in water is called vinegar.

Sodium ethanoate and brisk effervescence due to carbon dioxide gas are formed on reaction of ethanoic acid with sodium carbonate.

2CH3COOH(l) + Na2CO3(aq) → 2CH3COONa(aq) + CO2(g) + H2O(l)

The salt produced has common name sodium acetate.
