Hilly areas: Himachal Pradesh, a hilly area, has traditional system of irrigation called Kulhs. This consists of a headwall across a ravine to store and divert the flow of water through a canal to the field.
Plains: Jhalaras are found in Rajasthan and Gujarat They are human-made tanks. They are rectangular shaped with steps. They store sub-terranean seepage of a pond or a lake situated upstream.
