“By this the storm grew loud apace.
The water-wraith was shrieking;
And in the scowl of heaven each face
Grew dark as they were speaking”.

(a) The water had assumed the shape of a ghost in that wild weather.

(b) The sky looked frowning in that rough and wild weather. The human faces had become dark.

(c) The water-wraith was shrieking to give a premonition of the tragedy that was going to befall the Chieftain and his beloved.
