But still, as wilder blew the wind,
And as the night grew dearer,
Adown the glen rode armed men,
Their trampling sounded nearer.
Paraphrase: The blowing wind grew wilder and the night grew more deserted and fearful. The armed men of Lord Ullin rode down the valley. The stamping of their horses could be heard coming nearer.
