(a) Oxidation involves the gain of oxygen by a substance in a chemical reaction.

Examples:

2Zn(s) + O2(g) + Heat ➝ 2ZnO(s)

2Ca(s) + O2(g) + Heat ➝ 2CaO(s)

(b) Reduction involves the loss of oxygen from a substance in a chemical reaction.

Examples

CuO(s) + H2(g) + Heat ➝ Cu(s) + H2O(l)

ZnO(s) + C(s) + Heat ➝ Zn(s) + CO(g)
