(i) What do you see in the above picture?
(ii) Under what circumstances did they work?

(i) They are coalminers of Bihar (now Jharkhand) 1948.
(ii) They had to work deep down in the dark and suffocating mines. Working in this condition was not only back-breaking and dangerous, it was often literally killing.
