Whate’er the theme, the maiden sang
As if her song could have no ending;
I saw her singing at her work,
And o’er the sickle bending;
Paraphrase: Whatever might be the theme of the maiden’s song, she sang in a way that it appeared to have no ending. The poet saw her singing at her work and bending over her sickle.
