Interspecific crosses are rare in nature and intergeneric crosses almost unknown. Why?

The crosses between two different species are called interspecific crosses. As two species are reproductively isolated, the interspecific hybrid is sterile (like mule). Intergenic hybrids are almost non-viable hence intergenic hybrids are almost unknown.
