What is meant by water harvesting? How is it done?

Water harvesting means conservation of rain water. It is done by allowing rain water, falling on the roofs of buildings to flow into a deep trench in the ground. In this way, the ground water level is increased. The rain water is not allowed to flow into the rivers.
