A point-like object is placed at distance of 1 m in front of a convex lens of focal length 0.5 m.

A point-like object is placed at distance of 1 m in front of a convex lens of focal length 0.5 m. A plane mirror is placed at a distance of 2 m behind the lens. The position and nature of the image formed by the system is :

(1) 2.6 m from the mirror, real

(2) 1 m from the mirror, virtual

(3) 1 m from the mirror, real

(4) 2.6 m from the mirror, virtual

Explanation:

For I1 applying lens formula

1/v1 - 1/-1 = 1/0.5

v1 = 1

For I2 applying condition of plane mirror

For final image (I3) again applying lens formula

1/v3 - 1/-3 = 1/0.5

v2 = 3/5

The distance of final image from mirror

D = 3/5 + 3

D = 2.6

The image will be real (but it is given virtual in answer).
