War created a new political and economic situation.
(i) Led to a huge increase in defence expenditure which was financed by war loans and increasing taxes: custom duties were increased and income tax introduced.
(ii) Forced recruitment in villages caused widespread anger.
(iii) Crops failed; this resulted in an acute shortage of food.
(iv) 12 to 13 million people died due to famines and epidemics.
