Why do ionic compounds have high melting points?

In the formation of ionic compounds, positive ions (cations) and negative ions (anions) participate. These are closely packed and the ionic compounds exist as crystalline solids.

They have strong inter ionic forces of attraction and have high melting and boiling points.
