These are oxides that can act both as acid and base. For example, aluminium oxide (Al2O3) and zinc oxide (ZnO). The amphoteric character of zinc oxide is shown by the following reactions.

ZnO(s) + 2HCl(aq) → ZnCl2(aq) + H2O(aq)

(Basic nature)          Zinc chloride

ZnO(s) + 2NaOH(aq) → Na2ZnO2(aq) + H2O(aq)

(Acidic nature)
