The 0.001M solution of Mg(NO3)2 is adjusted to pH 9, Ksp of Mg(OH)2 is 8.9 × 10-12. At this pH

(a) Mg(OH)2 will be precipitated

(b) Mg(OH)2 is not precipitated

(c) Mg(OH)3 will be precipitated

(d) Mg(OH)3 is not precipitated

Correct answer: (b) Mg(OH)2 is not precipitated

Explanation:

pH = 9 ; [H+] = 10-9; [OH-] = 10-5;

[Mg2+] = 1 x 10-3;

[Mg2+][OH-]2 = 1 x 10-13

Given Ksp of Mg(OH)2 = 8.9 × 10-12

Which is more than 1 x 10-13

Hence Mg(OH)2 will not precipitated
