One mole of SO3 was placed in a one litre reaction flask at a given temperature when the reaction equilibrium was established in the reaction.

2SO3 ⇌ 2SO2 + O2

The vessel was found to contain 0.6 mole of SO2. The value of the equilibrium constant is

(a) 0.36

(b) 0.675

(c) 0.45

(d) 0.54

Correct answer: (b) 0.675

Explanation:

                2SO3 ⇌ 2SO2 + O2

Initial          1         0         0

At equilibrium 1 - 2α  2α    α

∴ 2α = 0.6,

∴ α = 0.3

[SO3] = 1 -2α = 1 - 0.6 = 0.4

[SO2] = 2α = 0.6

[O2] = α = 0.3

Keq = \(\frac{α \times(2α)^2}{(1 - 2α)^2}\)

= \(\frac{0.3 \times 0.6 \times 0.6}{0.4 \times 0.4}\)

= 0.675
