Correct answer: (a) Carbon dioxide and water

Explanation:

Catalytic converters are fitted into automobiles for reducing emission of poisonous gases. Catalytic converters have expensive metals namely platinum—palladium and rhodium (Pt-Pd and Rh) as catalysts.

As the exaust passes through the catalytic converter :

1. Unburnt hydrocarbons are converted into CO2 and H2O.

2. Carbon monoxide is changed to CO2.

3. Nitric oxide (NO) is changed to N, gas.

Vehicles equipped with catalytic converters should use unleaded petrol because lead in the petrol inactivates the catalyst.
