(a) (x + y)
Explanation:
S + O2 → SO2 + x .....(1)
SO2 + 1/2O2 → SO3 + y ....(2)
Adding (i) and (ii), we have
S + O2 + SO2 + 1/2O2 → SO2 + SO3
S + 1 1/2O2 → SO3
So, heat of formation of SO3 will be (x + y).
