Which of the following alternatives is correct?

(a) ΔH = ΔU

(b) ΔH > ΔU

(c) ΔH < ΔU

Correct answer: (c) ΔH < ΔU

Explanation:

ΔH = ΔU + ΔnRT

Δn = nP - nR

Now, Δn = 2 - \(\frac{5}{2}\) = -\(\frac{1}{2}\)

∴ ΔH = ΔU - \(\frac{1}{2}\)RT

Thus, ΔU = ΔH + \(\frac{1}{2}\)RT

∴ ΔU > ΔH
