A dye absorbs a photon of wavelength l and reemits the same energy into two photons of wavelength λ1 and λ2 respectively. The wavelength λ is related with λ1 and λ2 as:
(a) λ = \(\frac{\lambda_1 + \lambda_2}{\lambda_1 \lambda_2}\)
(b) λ = \(\frac{\lambda_1 \lambda_2}{\lambda_1 + \lambda_2}\)
(c) λ = \(\frac{\lambda_1^2 \lambda_2^2}{\lambda_1 + \lambda_2}\)
(d) λ = \(\frac{\lambda_1 \lambda_2}{(\lambda_1 + \lambda_2)^2}\)

Correct answer: (b) λ = \(\frac{\lambda_1 \lambda_2}{\lambda_1 + \lambda_2}\)
Explanation:
E = E1 + E2;
\(\frac{hc}{\lambda}\) = \(\frac{hc}{\lambda_1}\) + \(\frac{hc}{\lambda_2}\)
⇒ \(\frac{hc}{\lambda}\) = hc(\(\frac{\lambda_1 + \lambda_2}{\lambda_1 \lambda_2}\));
λ = \(\frac{\lambda_1 \lambda_2}{\lambda_1 + \lambda_2}\)
