At 298 K, equal volumes of SO2, CH4 and O2 are mixed in empty container. The total pressure exerted is 2.1 atm. The partial pressure of CH4 in mixture is :
(a) 0.6 atm.
(b) 1.2 atm
(c) 2.4 atm
(d) 3.6 atm

(b) 1.2 atm
Explanation:
Let the wt. of each gas mixed = x g
∴ mole of SO2 = x/64
mole of CH4 = x/16
mole of O2 = x/32
Total number of moles of the three gases
= x/64 + x/16 + x/32 = 7x/64
Partial pressure exerted by a gas in the mixture of non-reacting gases (p) is given by
p = moles of that gas/total moles x Total pressure
∴ pCH4 = x/16 x 64/7x x 2.1
= 1.2 atm
