The molecular velocities of two gases at the same temperature are u1 and u2 and their masses are m1 and m2 respectively. Which of the following expressions are correct?

(a) \(\frac{m_1}{u^2_1}\) = \(\frac{m_2}{u_2^2}\)

(b) m1u1 = m2u2

(c) \(\frac{m_1}{u_1}\) = \(\frac{m_2}{u_2}\)

(d) m1u12 = m2u22

Correct answer: (d) m1u12 = m2u22

Explanation:

U1 ∝ \(\sqrt{\frac{1}{m_1}}\) and U2 ∝ \(\sqrt{\frac{1}{m_2}}\)

∴ \(\frac{U_1^2}{U_2^2}\) = \(\frac{m_2}{m_1}\)

∴ m1u12 = m2u22
