In a hydrocarbon, mass ratio of hydrogen and carbon is 1:3, the empirical formula of hydrocarbon is

Explanation:

Mass ratio of H : C = 1 : 12

However, given mass ratio of H : C = 1 : 3

Therefore, for every C atom, there are 4 H atoms, hence empirical formula = CH4
