Nitrogen is replenished in the atmosphere by the process of denitrification. Decomposers or denitrifying bacteria, such as Pseudomonas, reduce nitrates back to nitrogen or ammonia or some other oxides. Free nitrogen returns to the atmospheric pool, and oxides are taken up by the plants.
