Formula for a lens connecting image distance (v), object distance (u) and the focal length (f) is:

\(\frac{1}{v}\) - \(\frac{1}{u}\) = \(\frac{1}{f}\)

This is the lens formula.

The lens formula has a minus sign(-) between \(\frac{1}{v}\) and \(\frac{1}{u}\) whereas the mirror formula a has plus sign(+) between \(\frac{1}{v}\) and \(\frac{1}{u}\).

Mirror formula:

\(\frac{1}{v}\) + \(\frac{1}{u}\) = \(\frac{1}{f}\)
