Given:

Speed of light in air = 3.0 × 108 m/s

Speed of light in medium X = 2 × 108 m/s

Speed of light in medium Y = 2.5 × 108 m/s

(a) air nx = ?

airnx = \(\frac{speed\;of\;light\;in\;air}{speed\;of\;light\;in\;medium\; X}\)

airnx = \(\frac{3.0 \times 10^8\; m/s}{2 \times 10^8\;m/s}\)

= 1.5

(b) airny= ?

airny = \(\frac{speed\;of\;light\;in\;air}{speed\;of\;light\;in\;medium\; Y}\)

airny = \(\frac{3.0 \times 10^8\; m/s}{2.50 \times 10^8\;m/s}\)

= 1.2

(c) xny = ?

xny = \(\frac{speed\;of\;light\;in\;medium\; X}{speed\;of\;light\;in\;medium\; Y}\)

xny = \(\frac{2.0 \times 10^8\; m/s}{2.50 \times 10^8\;m/s}\)

= 0.8
