Innate Immunity:

  • Non-specific in nature.
  • Present from birth.
  • Has different barriers.
  • For instance, mucus traps bacteria and other particles.
  • Examples - Innate immunity in humans against distemper, a fatal disease of dog, acid in the stomach and mucus coating of epithelium preventing microbial growth, interferons protecting non-infected cells from further viral infections etc.

Acquired Immunity:

  • Specific in nature.
  • It is acquired in response to a particular pathogen.
  • Has a memory of antibody.
  • For instance, post vaccination antibodies respond.
  • Examples - IgC antibodies transferred from mother to foetus through placenta, development of natural immunity in a person who has recovered from an attack of mumps, resistance induced by vaccination, etc.
