Which of the following is true for adsorption of gas on a solid surface?

(a) ΔH > 0, ΔS > 0

(b) ΔH > 0, ΔS < 0

(c) ΔH < 0, ΔS > 0

(d) ΔH < 0, ΔS < 0

Correct answer: (d) ΔH < 0, ΔS < 0

Explanation:

Adsorption is an exothermic process. In other words, ∆H of adsorption is always negative. When a gas is adsorbed, the freedom of movement of its molecules become restricted. This amounts to decrease in the entropy of the gas after adsorption, i.e., ∆S is negative.
